Hacettepe University continues to host awareness-raising activities in line with its vision of a sustainable and accessible campus without slowing down. In this context, a series of cycling events and important collaborations were carried out at Beytepe Campus, which stands out with its vast and green landscape, in order to minimize the carbon footprint of on-campus transportation, reduce the use of motor vehicles, and spread a culture of healthy living throughout the university. These initiatives, which directly contribute to the sustainability goals of our university, aim to place environmental awareness at the center of academic and social life.
A Strong Collaboration for Barrier-Free Pedals
With the belief that sustainable transportation should be equally accessible to everyone on campus without encountering any physical or social barriers, another highly important step was taken. The Accessible Hacettepe Community visited the Bicycle House, the heart of the Sustainable Bicycle Community’s activities, demonstrating one of the finest examples of solidarity on campus. During this meaningful gathering, held on May 2 under the powerful message “We are together for Barrier-Free Pedals!”, innovative solutions to eliminate transportation barriers within the campus were discussed. Joint cycling routes and inclusive event plans were developed to ensure participation by all students, including individuals with special needs. Expressing its sincere appreciation to the Accessible Hacettepe Community for this valuable visit and spirit of collaboration, the Sustainable Bicycle Community emphasized that such partnerships would continue to grow stronger in the future.
Pedal for Your Health, Take Action for the Environment!
On May 15, celebrated globally as Bike to Work Day to promote alternative transportation methods, a special campus ride was organized through a joint initiative by the Hacettepe Sustainable Bicycle Community and the Recreation Community. Held in the unique natural environment of Beytepe Campus to highlight that sustainable transportation alternatives are not merely a preference but a necessity for our future, the event brought together participants around the motto “A healthier you, a more livable world!” Gathering at the Bicycle House at 12:30 PM, participants pedaled together across the campus roads, delivering a strong visual message about both personal well-being and environmentally friendly transportation. This ride once again demonstrated how enjoyable a clean, quiet, and sustainable transportation network can be as an alternative to vehicle traffic on campus.
Every Pedal Creates Awareness
The cycling culture that continues to grow day by day at Beytepe Campus is, of course, not limited to specific weeks or special occasions; it is gradually becoming an organic part of everyday life. Community members continue their daily rides throughout the year, riding through campus roads with the wind behind them and channeling their energy into the pedals. These regular rides, carried out side by side by our student communities that continue to strengthen their digital and physical presence under their institutional identities, not only directly support the physical and mental well-being of participants but also help spread ecological awareness throughout the campus community. Every new pedal stroke represents a step toward cleaner air, a quieter environment, and a stronger campus culture built upon the principles of sustainability.
