Green Campus Ranking 2024

Hacettepe University has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by achieving notable success in this year's international UI GreenMetric rankings, which assess universities' performance in creating environmentally friendly and sustainable campuses. In the 2024 rankings, our university scored 7,585 points out of a total of 10,000, securing the 299th position among 1,477 universities worldwide and the 30th position among 120 universities in Turkey, reaffirming its dedication to sustainability initiatives.

The UI GreenMetric system evaluates universities and their campuses across six main categories:

  • Setting and Infrastructure
  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Waste
  • Water
  • Transportation
  • Education and Research

Hacettepe University excelled particularly in the "Setting and Infrastructure" category, scoring 1,475 out of 1,500 points. This remarkable achievement places the university 4th globally and 1st in Turkey in this category. Key factors contributing to this success include the presence of forested areas, the conservation of natural habitats on campus, the budget allocated for sustainability initiatives, facilities provided for individuals with special needs, and other infrastructure-related efforts implemented across the university.

Additionally, the university showcased exceptional performance in the "Waste" category, scoring 1,725 out of 1,800 points. This achievement ranks Hacettepe 61st globally and tied for 1st place among five universities in Turkey, with an overall 2nd place in terms of total points. Key initiatives include the processing and/or recycling of approximately 570 tons of organic waste collected annually by campus dining services and the Landscaping Planning Directorate, as well as 140 tons of inorganic waste collected through the Zero Waste efforts led by the Sustainable Campuses Coordination Office. Other waste management policies implemented across the university also contributed significantly to this success.

This success is a result of Hacettepe University's pioneering approach to sustainability and its environmentally conscious policies. We would like to once again emphasize our commitment to continuing our efforts with the goal of leaving a more livable world for future generations.
